Gender balance: did we get to 40%?

17 June 2019

The percentage of women in the European Parliament has grown from 16% in 1979 to 37% in 2014. What about 2019 elections? We did the math and this percentage should have increased at least by 2 percentage points, getting us closer to 40%!

From our estimates, countries like Greece, Cyprus and Belgium maintained the same trend of 2014, with an under-representation of women in the EP. Amongst the feminist frontrunners we find, as in 2014, Sweden and Malta.

Waiting for official news from the European Parliament about gender balance, we are already equipped to contact all the amazing women in the EP. And you? Check out The MEP Database: e-Contacts EP!
